What is technical mathematics?

If you’ve heard that you need to learn math for certain trades such as plumbing or welding, you may be wondering what exactly that means. Well, there are several different types of math – the most popular one is pure math, which is used in many science-based jobs, including engineering and physics.

However, there are also other types of math – technical math is a type of applied mathematics that is used by tradesmen. This form of math is a combination of practical knowledge and mathematical skills that tradesmen use on the job.

It’s Not All “Pure” Math

While pure math is considered a good thing to have, it’s not necessarily the best option when it comes to the GMAT. This is because it can be extremely difficult to solve problems on the GMAT using pure math.

Instead, it’s a good idea to use technical mathematics when solving the questions on the GMAT, especially those that seem to require simple calculation methods. Often, the technical method is the most efficient and fastest way to get to an answer.

The trick to knowing when a problem is really simple or complex lies in the numbering format that the question asks for. This can be done by reading the question carefully and taking notes of the numbers that are asked for.

In the case of this problem, for example, the question asks for xy 0 and 3×2. The numbering format is clear, but the question still requires some calculating to reach an answer. Luckily, this can be done quickly and efficiently with technical math.

How to Approach Problems With Technical Mathematics

When a question on the GMAT seems to be asking for pure math, it’s often time to apply your knowledge of algebra and trigonometry. This will save you valuable seconds on the GMAT.

For example, if you have to calculate the peak current flow in an alternating current network, you’ll need to know how to work with partial fractions and integration. The technical math approach for this kind of problem is to calculate the peak current flow, then integrate and differentiate.

It’s a little more complicated to do, but it’s a better approach than trying to plug in numbers and figure out how much each part is worth. The result is that you can get to an answer in two minutes or less, making this a great approach for a problem on the GMAT.

If you’re unsure about your abilities in this area, it’s a good idea to talk with your teacher or an advisor. They can help you find out if this is the right choice for your career.
