Are there any prerequisites for using ALEKS Calculus?

For many majors (Engineering, Biology, Microbiology & Immunology, Biochemistry, Business, Chemistry and Computer Science) completing a math placement assessment prior to registration for classes is necessary to be placed into the appropriate first semester course. For example, if you are an Engineering major and you need to take Calculus I or II, completing a math placement assessment may allow you to test into a course with a higher prerequisite, thus potentially allowing you to graduate earlier than if you did not complete the math placement assessment.

During orientation, all freshmen and transfer students are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment as part of their registration process. This assessment helps us to identify what courses you need to register for and how well you will succeed in those courses.

Once you have completed the ALEKS assessment, your placement score is automatically transmitted to UTSA’s Office of the Registrar and uploaded to your student record. This means that you will have access to targeted learning modules within ALEKS that help you prepare for your first calculus class at UTSA.

These modules are designed by ALEKS to address the areas that your ALEKS placement assesses you need to work on in order to meet the course’s placement requirements. They’re available free of charge, but please note that the ALEKS learning modules are not intended to substitute for actual classroom instruction.

After completing the ALEKS math placement assessment, you can review your score and identify which of the “Prep” learning modules will best support you in meeting your goal. Click here for a table that will help you determine the module that is right for your needs.

You can retake the ALEKS math placement assessment as many times as you need to to reach your goal. However, the highest score will be used to register you for Fall and Spring semesters.

If you have not taken a calculus course and you are a first-time UTSA student, you must also take the AP Calculus AB or BC test before registering for any math courses at UTSA. Bring your AP scores with you when you meet with an Academic Advisor during orientation.

Taking the AP Calculus AB or BC exam in the summer before you enter UTSA will give you a better idea of what course(s) you need to take at UTSA. You can also retake the AP Calculus AB or BC in Orientation if you have taken this test before and do not have a score on your UTSA record.

For all other students, a good indication of your readiness for a mathematics course is based on your ALEKS math placement assessment score. If you do not have a high enough ALEKS math placement assessment score, it is recommended that you use the Prep for Calculus learning module to practice and then retake the ALEKS math placement test.

If you have scored below a score of 61 on the ALEKS math placement assessment, then we strongly recommend that you take an introductory course in a lower level subject or retake the ALEKS assessment. We recommend that you do this within 24 hours of completing the math placement assessment. Your ALEKS score will be updated and you can then register for your next math course as indicated in the placement guide.
