Can ALEKS Calculus be used by homeschoolers?

If you have an incoming student with a valid ALEKS placement score, he or she will be able to register for math courses as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. These include students who have not taken a math class in high school, international students, homeschoolers and transfer students who do not have prior math credit.

If your student does not have an incoming score, he or she will need to take the ALEKS assessment at freshman or transfer orientation. This is used to determine which math course is best for the student. If you are unsure which math course is best for you, contact your academic advisor for assistance.

Calculus is an advanced math course that requires more complex concepts and computations. Students who are not prepared for this course should work with a math tutor or enroll in an introductory level math course.

The ALEKS Placement and Learning Program offers a variety of math courses for students from elementary through high school. These courses focus on the mathematics needed for a wide range of subjects, from chemistry and physics to business and education.

ALEKS is an online learning platform that provides one-on-one instruction and a self-paced environment for students in grades 3 through 12. Using artificial intelligence, ALEKS personalizes learning by targeting knowledge gaps and encouraging confidence and momentum as you progress through the course material.

It also includes a tool that helps parents and teachers track student progress. The program tracks and adapts to a student’s current skill levels and uses fact tables that are personalized for each student.

These fact tables can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. They can also be printed for use with the ALEKS program.

A student can retake the ALEKS assessment up to four times (five total attempts). After each attempt, the student must spend at least three hours in the Prep and Learning module before they can retake the test. The time spent in the learning modules is important to improving a student’s placement.

Students who retake the ALEKS assessment generally improve their scores and are placed in more appropriate math courses. However, this is not guaranteed as a student’s ALEKS score does not always reflect his or her actual ability in that subject area.

There are other methods for evaluating a student’s math readiness, including a student’s ACT and SAT test scores, high school math and AP math credits. The University also uses the Math Placement Score (MPS) to place incoming freshmen in introductory math courses.

MPS is calculated based on the student’s SAT/ACT score(s), high school GPA and high school math classes; it appears in your MyFIU account. The first course listed in your MPS is the first course you may register for at FIU.

If you have a valid MPS, you will be able to register for a wide range of math courses. These include algebra, precalculus and calculus.

Students with a high MPS can also take the ALEKS Assessment for Math Placement to determine their readiness in more advanced math courses. These students can then register for those courses, depending on their ALEKS scores and advisor recommendations.
