Statistics is a college course that most schools require from students whether you’re a freshman or an adult returning. It also tends to feel like one of the most unnecessary! Most of us took a similar course back in our high school days. Realistically, it’s not the most beneficial class for a majority of majors!

It’s not terribly exciting, it can be challenging and demanding with the course load and can feel like it drains your day. So, to help you survive the class, we’ve gathered some of the best tips and tricks for making it through your Stats college course.

Tip #1: Don’t schedule that class too early in the day.

Let’s get real- it’s highly unlikely that you’re a morning person, and love waking up at 6AM to start your day and be in class by 7 or 8 AM. Far too many students into college think that by starting their school day early, they can be done by noon and have the rest of the day for other things, whether work, study, or play. Additionally, if you’re working a job, you want to be reasonable with your time and your sleep.

Realistically, you’re going to be staying up late either way, so don’t bother with an 8AM class, especially when it’s a math class. With college courses being typically only two days a week, it’s better to start yourself off around 9 or 10AM. The extra sleep will do wonders and you’ll be in better mental shape come class time.

Tip #2: Take it as an online course.

Math isn’t one of those classes where you’ll likely benefit from having in-person classes with open discussions and all that. It’s math- you need formulas, scratch paper, and some sharp focus. It might even be easier to take online than it is in person, plus you have the luxury of working around your own schedule.

Not all your courses should be done as an online course, because the social interactions and routine are an important part of the overall experience. However, it can help to have one or two of them online, and math is one of the best choices.

Tip #3: Find your school’s tutoring or resource center.

Most colleges and universities offer a tutoring or math resource center on campus. It’s often a physical space in the math or STEM building. It might be a resource online where you can find graduate student tutors, or it could be fellow peers who excel in math. You might have to pay a fee for the tutors, but for the most part, a majority of colleges offer some sort of free resource. Ask around and search the school’s website to find out what your school offers you in the sense of tutoring and guidance.

Tip #4: Take advantage of your professor’s office hours.

Professors are obligated to offer students office hours; it’s part of their job and they’re being paid for it. Your tuition pays for it. Most professors are eager to help students learn, as it’s why they went into the profession. Be polite, professional, and attentive, because there’s often great value in those office hours.

Not only are they likely to recognize the extra time you’re willing to put in for their class, but it also gives you face-to-face time with them. At larger universities, you might be taking a course with hundreds of other students, making it impossible for a professor to remember or recognize you. But, when you get that office hour time, it lets them put a face to the name. This can have a tremendous impact down the line when you’re looking for things like references for a job or recommendation letters for graduate school.

Tip #6: Start a study group.

Study groups sound a bit cheesy, but they’re great for a variety of reasons. First, they make it easier to hold yourself accountable for doing work and paying attention in class. You have to rely on one another for help, which means you are more likely to put forth the effort to get stuff done. Second, it’s a great way to get to know people in your course and establish connections with your peers. Third, with math, there’s only one right answer, so if you and your study group can get to the same answer together, you’ll know it’s the right one. Study groups are a great way to bring a social but academic balance to your life.

Tip #7: Hire someone to take the course or do the work.

Let’s not beat around the bush- if you’re not a STEM major, or you don’t plan on becoming a math teacher or professor, it’s possible you don’t even really need Stats 101.
